The Hakone Ropeway (箱根ロープウェイ) is a popular tourist attraction that provides breathtaking views of the Hakone region. This aerial lift system connects Sounzan Station, which is located at the terminus of the Hakone Tozan Cablecar, with Togendai Station, situated at the shore of Lake Ashinoko. It also makes stops at Owakudani and Ubako stations on the way. The Hakone Ropeway is fully covered by the Hakone Free Pass, which allows passengers to enjoy the ride without worrying about ticket costs.

The history of the Hakone Ropeway dates back to 1957 when the first section was opened, running from Sounzan to Owakudani. The section between Owakudani and Togendai was completed in 1963, making the ropeway a complete transportation system. Over the years, the ropeway has undergone several renovations and upgrades to enhance passenger safety and comfort. Today, it is a modern and efficient system that attracts tourists from all over the world.

The gondolas of the Hakone Ropeway depart every minute, and each gondola can accommodate up to ten people. The journey takes approximately 30 minutes, during which passengers can enjoy stunning views of the Owakudani Valley’s active sulfuric hot spring sources between Sounzan and Owakudani. They can also witness the breathtaking beauty of Lake Ashinoko and Mount Fuji between Owakudani and Togendai if visibility allows. It is worth noting that the Hakone Ropeway is especially popular during the autumn months when the surrounding trees change color, providing an even more beautiful view.

One of the unique features of the Hakone Ropeway is that a transfer of gondolas is necessary at Owakudani. This is because the section of the ropeway between Sounzan and Owakudani is steeper than the section between Owakudani and Togendai, and therefore, different types of gondolas are used. However, no transfer is required at Ubako, which is a popular stop for skiers during the winter months.

In addition to the stunning views, the Hakone Ropeway offers a range of other activities and experiences. At Owakudani Station, passengers can explore the volcanic valley and try out the famous black eggs that are boiled in the hot springs. There are also several hiking trails in the area for those who want to explore further. At Togendai Station, visitors can enjoy boat rides on Lake Ashinoko, which provides a unique view of Mount Fuji and the surrounding area.
