Discovering Japan’s Winter Wonderland

Niseko, Japan, is a small town located in the northern part of Japan’s Hokkaido Island. The town has become a popular destination among skiers and snowboarders from all over the world, thanks to its world-class ski resorts and stunning natural scenery. As a team, we have had the pleasure of visiting Niseko several times, and we can attest that it is one of the best ski destinations in the world.

One of the main draws of Niseko is the quality of its snow. The region receives an average of over 15 meters of snowfall each winter, making it one of the snowiest places on earth. The snow is also of excellent quality, thanks to its low water content, which makes it perfect for skiing and snowboarding. Niseko has four major ski resorts: Grand Hirafu, Hanazono, Niseko Village, and Annupuri, each with its own unique terrain and attractions.

Niseko is not just a winter destination. In the summer, the town is transformed into a green wonderland, with lush forests, pristine lakes, and breathtaking views of Mount Yotei. Visitors can enjoy hiking, mountain biking, and a range of outdoor activities, as well as exploring the town’s many cultural attractions, such as traditional Japanese onsens (hot springs) and local festivals.

When it comes to dining, Niseko offers a wide range of options to suit every palate. For those looking for western cuisine, there are plenty of restaurants serving pizza, burgers, and other western-style dishes. Traditional Japanese cuisine is also abundant in Niseko, with many restaurants offering local specialties such as soba noodles, sushi, and shabu-shabu. For a lively night out, visitors can head to one of the many izakayas (Japanese pubs) in town, where they can enjoy a variety of Japanese-style tapas and drinks. And for those looking for something truly special, the Michelin starred French restaurant Kamimura is not to be missed. Led by Chef Yuichi Kamimura, the restaurant serves a fusion of Japanese and French cuisine, using locally sourced ingredients to create dishes that are both elegant and delicious. Whether you’re in the mood for a casual meal or a fine dining experience, Niseko has something to satisfy every craving.
